Earth Day Continues this Sunday 4/27 at the Madera Garden Work Party!

Sunday, April 27, 2008
1:00pm – 5:30pm

A couple of hours this Sunday will provide years of enjoyment and learning for our students today and tomorrow!

Shovel! Sort! Dig! Paint!

We’re going to finish the garden bed wall on our east slope and put the top coat of paint on our garden shed (wear painting clothes!). Another fun project will be to put in our stairs utilizing the same concrete blocks as our garden walls which will connect the upper and lower slopes of our garden. We’ll also create natural edging using all the big rocks we dug out of the soil.

Healthy Snacks & Refreshments Provided!
Thanks to a very generous Safeway gift card donation from Owen Jump’s family!
Bagels provided by Noah’s on Solano!

Thanks to last week’s incredible helpers! Michael Balmaceda, Cathy Chin and Tamika & Mariko Whitenack, Jessica, Maggie & Betsey McGuire, Laura Schooley, Linda Lin and Jacklyn & Justin Wang, Joanna & Ruth Pace, Martin, Andrea & Elena Dorn, Calvin & Kai Trampleasure, Casey Martin, Amy & Devra Sholinbeck, Virginia Northrop, Shoshana & Max Yaswen.

It was a wonderful surprise to see alum Lenny Eisen and mom Melissa come back to help Madera! Mariko and Shoshana are also alums who enjoyed being back at their beloved school. It was our biggest work party turn out so far…everyone was in the wonderful spirit of Earth Day.

Thanks also to our 3rd Graders and Ms. Timar’s 5th graders who have been sifting our soil to backfill the beds and weeding throughout the week.

Can’t Volunteer but Would Still Like to Help? Gift cards!
Your donation of Home Depot or OSH gift cards helps us to purchase the many gardening supplies we need to grow. Safeway, Lucky or Trader Joe’s gift cards enable us to provide our hardworking volunteers with nutritious snacks to keep them digging, sifting and weeding! Thanks for putting your thoughtful gift in a sealed enveloped with your name and marked “GARDEN” c/o the Madera office.

Donation Thanks and Wish List
Thanks to Linda Lin for her generous donations of several really cool looking tomato cages and for her offer to have her business, Potteryland, donate pottery to beautify the garden. Michael Balmaceda brought several herbs and tomato plant starts from his own garden, as well as a few tomato cages that’ll help the plants grow sturdy and Robin Hansen donated sage. Thanks to Ms. Schooley for securing a big donation of rich compost to ammend our stubborn clay soil.

Wish list: Weedblock cloth, dwarf citrus or apple trees, tomato cages, tree stakes, electric wok (for stir frying our future veggies!), boot scraper, self standing sturdy shelf (for garden shed), colorful acrylic paint for our garden shed mural, paintbrushes, 1/2″ wide or less poultry wire or metal hardware cloth.
