Madera Auction 2010: HoeDown!

Auction Q&A

WHY IS THE AUCTION “ADULTS ONLY”?
In the past this has been an adult’s only event of the school year. It is a time for the parents to enjoy an evening out and raise money for a good cause. Many of the children want to attend, but we serve complimentary wine and beer at the auction. The bidding in both the live and silent auctions is an activity which is really more appropriate for adults.

Madera 5th grade parents are offering onsite babysitting staffed by Madera parents and teen alums – $30 per child (that’s just $6/hr. including pizza, drinks & snacks!!!!) Please email Rula Adranly to reserve space for your child.  Space is limited!

WHY IS IT AT NIGHT ON A SATURDAY?
The auction is at its heart, a great party cleverly disguised as a fund raiser. The theme this year is “HoeDown”. Some parents and guest wear costumes for the theme.

WHY IS IT $25 A TICKET? ($30 AT THE DOOR.)
The ticket price covers the cost of the food and beverage service. There will be complimentary wine and beer serve, along with a delicious dinner that includes appetizers, salad, main entrée and dessert. We charge $25 in advance in order to encourage people to buy tickets in advance. This helps us plan for the event and estimate how much food, etc will be needed.

IS THERE A LIVE AUCTION ALSO?
The silent auction is held first. Then, the live auction starts.

HOW DOES ONE BID IN A SILENT AUCTION?
In a silent auction, there is no auctioneer. Instead, items are displayed with papers called “bid sheets” next to them. You write your name and bid for an item on its bid sheet. Each bid must be a minimum dollar amount higher than the previous one. At an announced time, the bid sheets are collected and the highest bid wins.

Let us look at a sample bid sheet.

Item: $25 Old Navy Gift certificate
Retail  Value $25
Minimum Bid $12
Minimum Increment $2
In this example, “D. Houser” bid $12 for a $25 gift certificate. Then “Hiramoto” came by and wrote a bid for $14. A few minutes later, “J. Armor” bid $16. “D. Houser” came back and bid $18. Finally, “S. Thuesen” walked over and bid $20 and then the bidding closed a sheets were collected.

Name Bidder number   bid
D. Houser   113            $12
Hiramoto    15               $14
J. Armor     256             $16
D. Houser     113             $18
S. Thuesen      65             $20

In this example “S. Thuesen” wins a $25 Old Navy gist certificate for $20!! Madera PTA gets the $20!! It’s a win-win situation!! (The losing bidders pay nothing.)
