Encore! *updated*

Hi all- due to circumstances beyond control, there will NOT be an encore performance of the Madera band this year. Sorry for the confusion. Students with district loaner instruments should return them at school next week- there has been an announcement about this, and the district will coordinate return of these instruments.

I’m very pleased that the school community and students rallied behind the music program this year. As you know, elementary music education was cut from the district budget last year. In the spring of 2010, we piloted a brief band program in partnership with the City of El Cerrito, and built on that schedule when we introduced this year’s program. Similar programs were offered at Harding and Kensington Schools. Madera’s band enrollment was more than the other schools combined, and it’s gratifying to see how music education has been embraced by our school community.

I’m hopeful that the program can continue to grow next year, building on what our kids have learned this year, and applying some of the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve tried to put together the program. Details of next year’s band program will be available shortly after the start of the school year.

In the meantime, please encourage your kids to keep playing- the Madera band director Marcos Saenz will be teaching a Band Camp and a Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp through the City of El Cerrito

Two other good local resources for classes or private instruction are The East Bay Center for the Performing Arts and The Jazz School

Many thanks to the City of El Cerrito staff for managing all of the details of setting this up, to our band directors, to parents for their support of the program- and to our great kids, who, amazingly, over the course of the year, turned into a real band!! Congratulations!
