WHAT IS THE OLYMPICS?
The Olympics is a PTA-sponsored activity that is the school’s second largest fund raising event of the year. In previous years between $5,000 and $11,000 has been raised to help support the computer lab, classroom art supplies, cultural arts assemblies, and more.
WHAT SHOULD A STUDENT DO ONCE THEY DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE?
Once a student has decided to participate, they must have a parent or guardian sign a permission slip. The permission slips will come home in the blue folder a few weeks before the event. Once the slip is signed, it can be placed in the Olympics box in the office or given to their teacher. Signed permission slips MUST be turned the Wednesday before the event. If they have not been received by then, the student can turn them in to the Information Booth that will be on the lower yard during the Olympics.
ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT, WHERE SHOULD STUDENTS GO?
If a student has turned in a signed permission slip, their teacher will give them an Olympic sticker. Once they are dismissed from class, they can take this sticker and head down to the event. This sticker will enable the volunteers to mark off events that the student has completed. Teachers are not responsible for taking their students to the event.
HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR THIS EVENT?
This event needs lots of volunteer help! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Beth Lewis.
HOW DO STUDENTS RAISE MONEY?
Students can help raise money for Madera by having family and friends make pledges towards each of the events in which they participate. Pledge forms will go out in the blue folders along with the permission slips.
WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE PLEDGES?
Students are asked to collect their pledges at any time before or up to two weeks after the event. These pledges can then be put into the Olympics box in the office.
DO PARENTS HAVE TO ATTEND THE EVENT?
This event takes place after school. Students should be in the care of their parent or guardian.
CAN STUDENTS WHO ATTEND AFTERCARE PARTICIPATE?
Yes, students in aftercare who have turned in signed permission slips can participate. These students should first check in at aftercare and then the teachers there will give them further instructions.
DO STUDENTS HAVE TO COMPLETE ALL EVENTS?
While we encourage students to challenge themselves, this is supposed to be a fun event! If fatigue, heat or hunger prevent a student from finishing, they will still receive a medal!
WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS DO WHEN THEY ARE FINISHED?
Once a student has finished, they can bring their sticker to the Check-out Booth. Here a volunteer will give them a medal and some snacks!
