Dear Madera families,
We held our March PTA meeting last evening in the library. An enthusiastic turnout included 5(!) teachers. Thank you to all who attended.
The President opened the meeting by reviewing recent events, and thanking volunteers that helped make the events possible. Special thanks to Lucy Kirsch (Pizza & Movie Night) and Christian Matthews (The Boot Classic). Our 6th graders were instrumental in each of these events, and Madera PTA is proud of them! We hope all the 6th graders have a fantastic time at Science Camp at the end of the month.
We also held our first Farmer’s Market of the year. Great work Molly and the Madera garden crew. They raised $530! Molly attended our meeting and updated us on exciting developments in the garden. You can read more at Molly’s blog.
On March 7th the teachers welcomed us for Open House. I hope you had a chance to tour the campus and explore the classrooms. I was really impressed by the variety of projects and art work! Thank you teachers!
Upcoming events: Negar Souza briefed us on Madera’s Got Talent, coming to our MPR on Friday, March 22nd. If you would like to lend a hand for this event, please contact Carolina Mejorada, who is chairing
Jen Toledo is chairing our “Kentucky Derby Auction” – Saturday, May 4th. The annual auction / dinner is our premier fund raising event, that is not too be missed. Tickets are on sale now.
Complimentary tickets for teachers will be distributed very soon. We will need a strong volunteer crew to make this event a success. Start thinking right away how you might contribute: donate goods or services, help set up, follow up with potential donors, etc. Contact Jen to contribute.
Notes on the Kentucky Derby (not actually in the meeting): The Kentucky Derby horse race is an American tradition, and this year will be the 139th consecutive running! The race is held on the first Saturday in May – just like this year’s auction!! The race is for 3 year old thoroughbreds, and is 10 furlongs long. Many women attend the race wearing elaborate, lavish hats.
Our Treasurer, Carolee Purcell, summarized the first meeting of the Budget Committee. Some highlights include:
- budget proposals deadline set for April 30th
- Matt Reed and Negar Souza will consult with chairs to evaluate and improve programs
- we will survey our teachers and parents to guage needs
Start thinking right now about your program’s needs for 2013-2014.
Currently, we need yard supervisors. We have scant coverage on the upper and lower yards. If you would like to help out, please contact Anne-Marie Soltero.
The membership approved a budget increase for the Striders program (+$200). Thank you to Ms. Dorn!
We also heard from our Disaster Preparation Chair, Beckie Denio. She presented us with a comprehensive 5 year plan to ready the campus in case of disaster or shelter in place scenarios. She asked membership for an additional $2400 for the remainder of this school year to purchase water containers and various needed supplies. After a lengthy and informative discussion, we approved the request, choosing to spend the monies from our reserve account.
Our nominating committee presented the slate of candidates for the 2013-2014 Madera PTA Executive Board. Thank you to all who have stepped forward to serve on the PTA.
