Farewell Celebration for Jan Jones

Friday, November 15th, 2013
2:45pm – 4:00pm in the Library

In 1984, Jan Jones was hired by Madera Elementary School. Jan’s love for music was why she continued her musical talents through her teachings.

Before that Jan Jones lived an impressive life. She was educated at Cal State University East Bay where she majored in classical piano performance studying theory, conducting and accompanying. Jan has studied classical piano with Dr. Donald King Smith, Julian White, and others; jazz piano with Don Haas, Mark Levine and Debbie Poryes; and voice with Hal Schaffer. She has arranged music for and played in many chamber ensembles, and composed music for her band and students. Jan furthered her education in the Kodaly method of teaching music to young children at Holy Names University.

A professional pianist, Jan had played in bands and as a solo performer most of her life, playing in major San Francisco and East Bay hotels from 1972 until 1993.

Besides dedicating 29 years to Madera, Jan has maintained a private piano studio since 1970, where she has enjoyed teaching students of all ages and abilities, teaches at Kensington Elementary School and also teaches in the MASEP program in El Cerrito.

Jan will be greatly missed by the Madera community, staff and most of all, the children. We wish her well in her new ventures.
