Leeks for sale at the last Farmers Market

Hello Madera Community-

I wanted to take a moment to update you about what is happening in the garden over the next couple of weeks and into the summer.

First up, we still have available weeks for those of you who are interested in helping to care for the garden over the summer. We call this our Adopt-A-Garden program and it is in its 5th year. The fact is, we need help with keeping our garden weeded and watered over the summer, and so we ask that Madera families and staff sign up for a week of garden duty. The weeks that still need to be covered are as follows:

#1 June 7-June 13,    #3 June 21-June 27,    #6 July 12-July 18,    #7 July 19-July 25,

#8 July 26-Aug 1,   #9 Aug 2-Aug 8,    #10 Aug 9- Aug 15,    #11 Aug 16-Aug 22,    #12 Aug 23-Aug 29

Email me ( if you are interested and I will send you more details.

Next– we are having our last Farmers Market on Friday, May 23rd from dismissal to 3:30. The Market will be taking place under the building on the lower yard. Prices range from $3-$5, so bring your wallet and a reusable bag. What sorts of delights are we offering?

-Farm grown herbs, veggies, fruit, and bouquets in beautiful clay jars and vases

-Spiced nuts from Oren’s Kitchen

Jamba Juice

-Samples from Farmigo

-A cooking demonstration by Deb Dutta, the creator of HerbNZest and Madera parent (she will be using produce from Farmigo to create mini kale wraps and mustard avocado crema over grilled asparagus)

-And music by our very own Ms. Phippard

Come on out and join us!

Finally, on Saturday, May 31st we are having two garden related events. Our 2nd grader’s botanical illustrations will go on display in the LIBRARY along with other student paintings and photos of the garden’s springtime splendor. This “open gallery” will be happening from 11 to 4 and light snacks will be provided. No need to RSVP, just come on by!

Also, on that same Saturday, we are having an end of the year picnic in the garden between 11 and 3. If you would like to take an opportunity to relax and break bread with other Madera folk, and say good-bye to the garden for the summer, this is your chance. If you are interested in attending, please contact our garden co-chair, Sasha Swain, at

Thanks all and have a great summer,

Ms. Molly
